SUMMARY

Spread over 3,700 hectares, the 138MW Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm is one of the largest wind farms in South Africa, comprising sixty Siemens 2.3 MW turbines.

Located about 70 kilometres west of Port Elizabeth in the Kouga Municipality of the Eastern Cape, it was one of the first onshore wind farms to be developed under the country’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme.

The project reached Commercial Operations mid-2014, having started construction in December 2012 and generates c. 460 000 MWh per year enough clear renewable electrical energy to meet the needs of around 100 000 average South African households and will save 8.4 million tonnes of carbon emissions over the project life compared to traditional fossil fuel power plants.
