ATAF is AIIM's dedicated blended finance fund focused on early-stage, asset-heavy energy transition infrastructure across Africa.
ATAF targets the most underserved segment of Africa's climate finance value chain, investing in platform companies and scale-up businesses across three thematic decarbonisation verticals: clean electrons (solar, wind, geothermal, hydro, energy storage and transmission), clean molecules (green hydrogen, green ammonia, biofuels and biogas), and sustainable transport (e-mobility, charging infrastructure and logistics platforms).
ATAF's strategy is to provide control or co-control investments in development platforms with proven technologies, supplying the missing 'middle grade' of scale-up capital that is larger than seed and earlier than traditional growth equity — accelerating private sector participation in Africa's energy transition.
ATAF is a USD 200 million fund structured with a 25% first-loss junior equity tranche, creating a unique risk-reward profile that protects Senior Investors while catalysing early-stage investment. The Fund targets a planned portfolio of 10–15 investments across the continent over a 10-year fund life.
AIIM targets sustainable infrastructure investments across Africa through 25 years of investment experience, USD 3.2 billion in AUM, and a track record of 15.2% gross USD IRR across energy transition investments. AIIM applies a rigorous ESG and impact framework — including sector-specific Theory of Change methodologies, climate mitigation and adaptation screening, and alignment with Multilateral Development Bank climate criteria and the UN's SDGs — to deliver measurable climate, economic and social outcomes through ATAF.
