Vredendal Solar Power Company was established to develop, own, construct, finance and manage a solar park in the town of Vredendal in the Western Cape. The park has an installed capacity of 10MW and consists of 35 000 x 300kW Renesola modules manufactured by Solaire Direct Technologies in Cape Town.
The project was awarded a 20-year power purchase agreement under the second procurement round of the REIPPP programme. The project began construction in 2013 and electricity delivery to the grid started in 2014.
Direct funding from the Vredendal solar PV plant is used to fund various local socio-economic development initiatives including provision of a community social worker, running workshops for the disabled and unemployed youth and funding for a teaching assistant in a local school.
