AIIM commits ZAR2 billion to investment in 500MW of generation capacity across five new wind farms

We are delighted to share with you that African Infrastructure Investment Managers (AIIM) has reached a significant milestone. In less than seven months we have unlocked 500MW in renewable energy and committed ZAR2 billion in capital to green energy development across the country.

This accomplishment is a testament to our unwavering commitment to sustainable African infrastructure projects and our drive to contribute to the development of crucial sectors such as the energy transition.

This landmark achievement compromises of the following deals:

Most recently, in May of this year, we, together with consortium members, achieved financial close on the 89MW Castle Wind Farm. This project, located in the Northern Cape province of South Africa, will supply renewable energy to Sibanye-Stillwater's mining operations through an Eskom wheeling agreement. By supporting the decarbonization efforts in South Africa's mining sector, we showcase our expertise in renewable energy and dedication to addressing the country's power deficit and infrastructure backlog.

In March 2023, AIIM successfully reached financial close for the 69MW Msenge Emoyeni Wind Farm. This landmark project marks the first utility-scale private wind farm in South Africa, with the generated power wheeled across the national electricity grid. The wind farm will supply renewable energy to Sasol South Africa Limited, contributing to the company's green hydrogen production efforts. AIIM, alongside other consortium members and Rand Merchant Bank, played a pivotal role in the development, acquisition, and financial closure of this project, highlighting our ability to execute complex renewable energy initiatives successfully.

Additionally, in February 2023, AIIM, as part of the Brezza Africana Consortium together with Red Rocket, achieved financial close for three wind projects awarded Preferred Bidder Status under the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPP). These projects, situated across various provinces in South Africa, will add a total capacity of 364MW to the Eskom grid, significantly contributing to the country's renewable energy goals. With AIIM as a critical participant, the Red Rocket Consortium will oversee the construction of these wind farms, creating over 600 jobs in the process.

Our success in securing and executing these projects reaffirms our position as the go-to partner for African investment. We have established a reputation for our ability to mobilize capital, navigate complex regulatory environments, and collaborate effectively with key stakeholders. This reputation makes us a trusted partner for both local and international investors seeking to remain at the forefront of private infrastructure investment in Africa, and make a meaningful contribution in reaching the country’s green energy goals.

We are truly excited about the role we can play in the future, as we continue to unlock new opportunities and drive sustainable development across the continent. We sincerely appreciate your continued support and look forward to sharing further successes with you.
